Singapore's founding father Mr Lee Kuan Yew passes away at 91

Over 100,000 people lined the streets on Sunday.

  • Family, friends, and colleagues delivered heartfelt eulogies during the State Funeral Service on Sunday.
  • Despite a torrential downpour, an estimated 100,000 people lined the streets on Sunday to witness Lee Kuan Yew's funeral procession. More than 1.2 million people also paid tribute to the first Prime Minister during the period of national mourning.
  • The State Funeral Service will be held at 2 pm on 29 March (Sunday) at the University Cultural Centre, National University of Singapore.
  • Mr Lee Kuan Yew will be featured on the cover of Time Magazine
  • All train services, both MRT and LRT, will operate overnight on Friday, 27 March, at frequencies of up to 20 minutes, for members of the public who wish to pay their last respects to the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew at Parliament House.
  • Today (March 27) will be the last day that Parliament House will be open to the public at all hours. Tomorrow (March 28), Parliament House will be closed at 8pm.
  • The Parliament held a special sitting today, March 26, in tribute to Lee Kuan Yew.
  • Crowds braved extremely long queues under the hot sun to pay their respects to the late Lee Kuan Yew. Queues leading to the Parliament House have been revised, with a special lane for the elderly, pregnant women, and families with children under 6 years old. 
  • Due to overwhelming response from the public, the Parliament will be open to the public for 24 hours daily until 28 March, during which it will close at 8pm. 
  • A report by ANZ-Roy Morgan stated that the nascent recovery of Singapore’s consumer confidence is likely to be arrested by founding father Lee Kuan Yew’s death.
  • National mourning has entered the public phase as Mr Lee's remains arrive in Parliament. Throngs of people have gathered outside the building to pay their respects to the first Prime Minister. His body will lie in state until 28 March, Saturday. Members of the public can visit from 10am to 8pm.
  • The body of Lee Kuan Yew will leave the Istana today, March 25, and will be brought to the Parliament House where members of the public can pay their respects.
  • The National Parks Board has named a new orchid, the Aranda Lee Kuan Yew, in honor of the first Prime Minister. 
  • The National Museum has launched a memorial exhibition in honor of Lee Kuan Yew. It will be held from 25 March to 26 April daily from 10am to 8pm.
  • Some of the country’s biggest listed firms have changed the colour of their social media pages to black and grey to mark the passing of Singapore's founding father Lee Kuan Yew.
  • Condolence boards are available in front of the Istana by the Main Gate from 23 March (Monday) to 29 March (Sunday), for those who wish to pen their tributes to the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew. Similar condolence boards will also be set up in front of Parliament House from 12pm today till Sunday. Those who wish may lay flowers at these two locations too.
  • Condolence books will also be opened at all Overseas Missions for overseas Singaporeans and friends. The public can express their condolences and share their memories of the late Mr Lee at the official website.   • The Singapore Exchange today joined the nation in mourning the death of Mr. Lee Kuan Yew and expressed its condolences to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, its Board Member Lee Hsien Yang and their families.

In a statement released by the Prime Minister, there will be a period of National Mourning from 23 March (Monday) to 29 March (Sunday).

As a mark of respect to the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, the State flags on all Government buildings will be flown at half-mast from today to Sunday.

A private family wake will be held from 23 March (Monday) to 24 March (Tuesday) at Sri Temasek.

Mr Lee’s body will lie in state at Parliament House from 25 March (Wednesday) to 28 March (Saturday), for the public to pay their respects. Those who wish to pay their last respects at Parliament House can do so from 10 am to 8 pm daily from Wednesday to Saturday.

A State Funeral Service will be held at 2 pm on 29 March (Sunday) at the University Cultural Centre, National University of Singapore.

The State Funeral Service will be attended by the late Mr Lee’s family, friends and staff, the President, Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, Old Guards, senior civil servants, grassroots leaders and Singaporeans from all walks of life. The State Funeral Service will be followed by a private cremation at Mandai Crematorium.

Condolence books and cards will be available in front of Istana by the Main Gate from Monday to Sunday, for those who wish to pen their tributes to the late Mr Lee. Condolence books will also be opened at all Overseas Missions for overseas Singaporeans and friends.
