How to get a blogger’s attention

Blogs are fast becoming the next advertising phenomenon. And this is not just in Singapore.

Bloggers are turning into your customer’s best friends – sharing life experiences, stories and even products they love, including potentially yours.
They can help you leverage a more trustworthy and reliable image while providing the content, a massive audience and platform to communicate and acquire new customers with.

1. Know who you’re contacting
Nothing beats an email starting with a company having read my blog, telling me how much they like it and giving me a specific reason as to why they’ve chosen to work with me. A blogger appreciates it when a company has read their blog and chosen them not because of their viewership but because of the quality and effort they’ve put into acquiring it.

2. Make them feel exclusive
Bloggers like feeling special, who doesn’t? When a company goes all out and hires a chauffeur to drive me to their event, you can be pretty sure that I’ll write about them. Of course you don’t have to go all out, but the simple things do add up for bloggers. Simple things like knowing they are one out of ten bloggers you’ve invited instead of 100 and forgetting about starting your email with “Dear Bloggers”. They have names too.

3. Offer something for readers
A blog wouldn’t be anything if it weren’t for the people who read them. Bloggers appreciate when a company offers to sponsor giveaways. Sponsoring a giveaway or providing valuable information can help you score high in favorability and help increase viral buzz of your products.

4. Be a friend
Companies who choose to get to know me as a person will always be top of mind. Maintaining a relationship with selected bloggers helps you more in the long term because you have a group of bloggers who are comfortable with your products and brand and familiar with talking about them.

5. Don’t expect anything and you’ll come out with something
Don’t be pushy. Unless you have signed up for an advertorial, companies who give me a must do and post list will probably end up with nothing. Give bloggers space and freedom.

So there you have it, my top five must-know tips to getting a blogger’s attention. Whether it’s an email or a phone call, make sure you’ve done your background check, have a sweet deal they can’t resist, get to know them as people and give them the space they need to help you reach your intended audience.
