WWF Singapore, Hatch Blue partner to tackle blue carbon
Blue carbon ecosystems are highly effective at fighting climate change.
The World Wide Fund for Nature Singapore and Hatch Blue have launched the Blue Catalyst, an open challenge to find technological solutions for expanding blue carbon ecosystems.
Blue carbon ecosystems, such as mangroves and seagrasses, are highly effective at fighting climate change because they store up to four times more carbon than other ecosystems.
These ecosystems also safeguard $1b (US$800b) in food security and livelihoods annually, yet 40% of mangrove-dependent species are threatened globally.
However, carbon markets are becoming a key way to finance the restoration of these ecosystems, with their value projected to grow to as much as $45b (US$35b) by 2030.
