UMC expands SG cleanroom capacity on rising AI demand
Phase 4 development will be paired with the construction of future Taiwan facilities.
United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) will increase cleanroom capacity at its Singapore operations as part of a phased expansion plan to meet demand linked to artificial intelligence (AI) adoption.
The group will install the cleanroom at its Phase 4 facility and purchase additional equipment to increase its silicon photonics capacity.
“With the building shell already built, we can expand cleanroom capacity efficiently as customer demand ramps,” said UMC Chairman Stan Hung.
The expansion complements UMC’s plan to construct a new fab building at its Tainan campus in Taiwan, which will house the future Phase 7 and Phase 8 facilities.
The group said the development will reinforce Singapore’s position as UMC’s largest manufacturing site outside Taiwan.
The dual-track approach is designed to meet near-term customer demand whilst establishing the structural footprint required to capture future high-growth AI and edge-computing applications, it added.
