MFA urges Russia to 'peacefully' settle dispute with Ukraine

The government urges parties to settle the dispute peacefully.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has strongly condemned Russia's “special military operation” and reported attacks on the Donbas region in Ukraine.

“Singapore strongly condemns any unprovoked invasion of a sovereign country under any pretext,” MFA Spokesperson Vivian Balakrishnan said, adding that Singapore is “gravely concerned” about the situation.

Balakrishnan also underscored that Ukraine’s “sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity must be respected,” amidst the dispute.

The MFA spokesperson also urged Russia to take on a peaceful settlement of the dispute, in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.

“We hope military actions will cease immediately,” the spokesperson added.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky said at least 137 people have already died on the first day of Russia’s attack

The tension between Ukraine and Russia was ignited after the former expressed ambition to join NATO which angered Russia President Vladimir Putin.
