Leaving on a jetplane: Singaporeans travel abroad more than global peers
9 in 10 travelled for leisure since 2013.
The Singaporeans’ love to travel is also eclipsing global averages as they travelled more than the Asia Pacific (84%) and global (76%) means in the last two years. Curiously, the majority chose their next-door neighbor Malaysia (45%) as their top travel destination while the country is just a bus ride away.
According to Visa’s Global Intentions Study 2015, Singaporeans just love taking trips for leisure, as respondents said they intend to travel an average of 4 trips in the next two years; One more than Asia-Pacific’s average, and two more than the global mean.
“Singaporeans love to travel, with frequent travel for leisure becoming part of our culture. On top of that, Singapore is centrally located and is also a global aviation hub, making it easy for us to travel to all parts of the world,” said Ms. Ooi Huey Tyng, Visa Country Manager for Singapore.
“Family bonding (57 per cent) is cited as the top motivation for Singaporeans to travel in the next one year, according to the Study. Other popular reasons cited for travel include experiencing cultures (39 per cent) and the opportunity to rest and relax (38 per cent). However, it is interesting to note that Singaporeans aged 18- 24 cite rewarding self (45 per cent) as the key driver to travel in the next one year,” the study said.
