Iron Mountain Data Centers lauded at SBR International Business Awards 2024

The solution has delivered significant energy savings and keeps them on track in their climate-neutral commitments by 2030.

Global data centre operator Iron Mountain Data Centers (IMDC) won an innovation award during the SBR International Business Awards 2024 for its successful implementation of a new digital twin AI solution to improve the cooling efficiency of their data centres.

IMDC worked with software company Red Dot Analytics (RDA) in 2023 to pioneer the deployment of the DCverse AI-Powered Cognitive Digital Twin in SIN-1, one of Singapore’s leading data centres.

This cutting-edge system uses real-time data collection, advanced physics-informed machine learning algorithms, and predictive analytics to deliver optimised control policy recommendations for the cooling system. The system policies where it fine-tuned efficiency included adjustments to flow rate, chilled water temperature, fan speed, and temperature setpoints, striking an optimal balance between cooling requirements and energy consumption.

After being deployed for just three weeks, the new solution proved to be delivering improved efficiencies in both the chiller plant and the computer room air conditioning operations. Over time, it has enabled SIN-1 to improve its Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) significantly by 3.5% as of September 2023.

This improvement translates to an average reduction in energy usage of 204,600 kWh per month, equivalent to estimated savings of S$71,610 per month.

“Considering the speed and success of this pilot project in Singapore, the solution has the potential to deliver similar levels of improvement at other IMDC facilities and more widely across the data centre industry. IMDC is currently in the process of planning its roll-out worldwide,” the company said.

IMDC has already committed to make its data centres climate neutral by 2030, and has even pledged to run on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2040. SIN-1 also has a BCA Green Mark Platinum Award.

SBR International Business Awards honours foreign companies in Singapore and recognises their outstanding projects that successfully earned them a foothold in the Lion City.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

If you've been wondering whether SBR could work for your company — yes, probably.

A lot of the companies we partner with started as readers. They'd been following our coverage for a while, saw their own customers and competitors in it, and eventually asked the obvious question: could we do something with you? The answer is usually yes. The shape of it depends on what you're trying to do.

The options are broader than most people assume — thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. Some partners use one channel; most use a mix. We figure out the right combination by starting with your brief, not with our rate card.

So if the question has been on your mind, here's the easy way to ask it.

We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how. It's a better use of everyone's time.
