Singapore workers’ optimism unfazed by economic slowdown

Almost 7 in 10 think they can find a new job in 6 months.

Local workers are optimistic about their job prospects in 2016 despite the sluggish economic and employment growth in Singapore, with almost 7 in 10 (67%) believing that they could secure a job at a different employer within 6 months, according to a report by recruitment firm Randstad Singapore.

“The Randstad Workmonitor Year-in-Review, which tracked employee sentiment throughout 2015, also found that Millennial and Generation Z workers were more confident than their older counterparts, with three-quarters (78 per cent) self-assured about their job prospects,” stated the report.

Only 9% of employees thought there was a high chance of losing their job in 2016, while 7 in 10 (67%) expressed optimism about their employers’ financial performance in the year.

The survey also showed that 27% of Singapore employees have changed jobs during the year, with 39% saying that the need for better working conditions (such as work-life balance) drove them to jump ship.

Other reasons include the personal desire for change (35%), organisational circumstances (34%), and their personal ambition to work at a management level (23%).
