Market Update: Global markets climb amid vaccine cheer

The Straits Times Index climbed along with most major indexes around the world on trading yesterday, gaining 17.44 points or 0.62% to finish the day at 2,843.07.

Investor sentiment was boosted after the United Kingdom rolled out its COVID-19 vaccine campaign.

Top gainers in Singapore were ComfortDelGro up by 2.45%, YZJ Shipbldg SGD jumped by 0.02 points or 2.14%, and CapLand IntCom up by 1.96%.

Meanwhile, Wall Street bucked the global trend, as US lawmakers continued debate over a stimulus deal and another round of COVID-19 relief. The Dow Jones Industrial shed about 105.07 points to close at 30,068.81.

The NASDAQ Composite also ended in the red, down by 243.82 points or 1.94% to 12,338.95, while the S&P 500 went down to 3,672.82, shedding 29.43 points or 0.79%

The London's blue-chip index, on the other hand, extended its gains. The FTSE 100 closed up by 0.08% at 6,564.29.

The FTSE 250 also made a jump, gaining 13.40 points to 19,883.89.
