The company has unlocked new ways of working that achieves Operational Excellence through Digital Transformation.

Petronas Penapisan Sdn Bhd scored the Analytics - Oil & Gas trophy at the recently concluded Malaysia Technology Excellence Awards, presented by Singapore Business Review.

Now in its second year, the awards event lauds enterprises that take the leap and take the lead in engineering trailblazing projects, virtual services, reconstructed strategies, and technological innovations.

Digitalization in the industrial revolution (IR) 4.0 is crucial for oil and gas companies. Therefore, PETRONAS Penapisan (Terengganu) Sdn Bhd (PPTSB) takes a leap in IR 4.0 train by setting the milestone in PETRONAS digital application, through three prime projects—Dynamic Risk Analyzer (DRA), PETRONAS Integrated Vision for Operation Excellence Technology (PIVOT), and Plant Operation Integrated Tools (POINT).

Digital Transformation in PP(T)SB is guided through technology and digital roadmap, where the projects are deployed to working levels to achieve accelerated result 2 (R2). The transformation journey began with roadmap development to create a 5-years structured timeline for PP(T)SB to achieve as a world class and empowered organization.

DRA is an online analytical diagnostic tool developed by Near-Miss Management (NMM) for critical systems and machinery that provides early warning and detection of hidden near misses to engineers, technicians, and plant operators.

DRA is implemented through 5 stages—initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, and closure. Through continuous improvement, DRA utilization provides proactive findings and solutions, hence reducing risks.

As a result of DRA deployment, PP(T)SB has successfully avoided unplanned slowdowns and shutdowns that amounts to RM7.7m (US$1.8m) whilst sustaining world class plant performance in terms of plant reliability at >99%.

PIVOT is a digital tool that enhances big data utilization through analytics. Using agile methodology, PIVOT provides data visibility and optimization of plant performance. Three PIVOT modules are used in PP(T)SB, namely descriptive analytics (DA), advanced analytics (AA), and citizen analytics (CA).

DA promotes data transparency at all levels through a single-sourced Dashboard, serving as a real-time data monitoring platform of Company KPIs to drive Operational Excellence whilst AA resolves critical operational “Pain Points” in PP(T)SB through 2 case studies—Pro-Yield and Energy Real Time Optimizer (ERTO), using big data and optimization models. Meanwhile, CA empowers staff to explore analytics through plug-and-play models.

POINT is an enabling digital tool used for daily operational activities in PP(T)SB. Through a centralized and integrated database, POINT provides better access and smooth monitoring to all users through six modules—eTASK, eLOG, eMANNING, eBSAFE, eGTASK, eIDEA. POINT utilization eliminates paperwork and increases self-accountability through seamless communication.

As a result, POINT increased 1.6 hours of operators’ wrench time daily, achieving best in class performance of up to 60% productivity, translating into RM1.28m (US$307K).

By implementing digital transformation, PP(T)SB has achieved value creation of RM9m (US$2.15m) in 2019, resulting in a safe, reliable, and efficient environment in PP(T)SB through focused execution and shared success amongst its employees.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

The people you want to reach are already in this room.

Every quarter, SBR lands on the desks of the founders, CFOs, and directors running Asia's most consequential companies. Every day, they open our newsletter and read our website. It's a room that took twenty years to build — and it's the one most of our partners are trying to get into.

The good news is that the door is open. We work with companies on thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. The shape of the right partnership depends on what you're trying to do, which is why we'd rather start with a conversation than send a rate card.

If you have something this room should know about, tell us. We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how.

No rate cards until we understand the brief. It's a better use of everyone's time.
