Fearless forecast: Check out who will vie to possess the Yellow Dragon

Experts speak their minds about who will own the110-carat gem.

SBR: Who do you think will be vying for the Yellow Dragon? What should key players in the industry keep in mind when purchasing precious stones such as the Yellow Dragon?

Wealth-X: Mykolas D. Rambus, CEO

China, Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakstan are top on my list, given the large and growing numbers of super-rich buyers in these markets. We might also see a surprise buyer in the industry who bets on long-term appreciation.

Serious buyers want to understand the diamond's provenance, the story behind it. Where was it mined, when, to whom has it belonged to. This can make a enormous difference in price. Consider for example the premium prices paid for pieces from the late Elizabeth Taylor's collection.

Some of the basic and important ones buyers should consider is to determine the quality of the stone and the history. A large stone with many inclusions will be less desirable but color is also important. Is this a proper yellow diamond? The strength of the color determines that. Aside from the impressive size, what is the clarity and color? Does it have an interesting story? Why was it cut into the form it is in? What was it in the rough? Where did it come from and who certified it?

I don't know how it is being sold so I can't say who it's buyers will be. Also, the lack of information/transparency makes the whole thing suspect to me. Perhaps they are only revealing details to interested buyers. It is important when buying such stones to remember that they often fund unethical activities, going all the way to funding war crimes potentially.

I cannot really say who will be the potential owners of the Yellow Dragon, but taking into account that it's already in Singapore, Asian-based buyers will of course be on the edge of their seats, waiting to prey upon the gem as soon as possible. Singling out a name will be too reckless, but who knows, in the luxury industry, there will always be surprise buyers sprouting out of nowhere, and everyone will be shocked that someone rich is just hiding away, waiting for that highly precious gem to invest on.

As for what buyers should keep in mind, those would include the basics such as the color, size, history, and even the price of course. But most importantly a buyer must be emotionally attached to the gem. It is an investment, and an investment without the emotional attachment is useless.
