More than 5 in 10 online shoppers want sustainability info on products

Sustainability info affects the purchase decisions of eight in 10 consumers.

Over half of Singaporean consumers want e-commerce platforms to provide sustainability information on their products, research from People’s Movement to Stop Haze (PM.Haze) revealed.

Some (52%) specifically want the e-commerce platforms to implement a filter or create separate categories for sustainable products to aid their identification.

According to the study, platforms such as Cold Storage, Sheng Shiong, FoodPanda, Fairprice, and RedMart lacked information on sustainability certifications and separate categorisations for sustainable products.

PM.Haze underscored that sustainability information is important in e-commerce platforms given that eight in 10 consumers (87%) consider such information to be important in informing their purchase decision.

More than half of online shoppers (61%) also prefer products with sustainability information listed.

“Access to product sustainability information is critical in allowing consumers to make informed decisions of their purchases,” PM.Haze reported.

“Brands and businesses in the high-impact sectors have the responsibility to provide sustainability information in an accurate and easily understandable manner. In the long run, making this information available will help promote sustainable consumption among consumers,” the non-profit organisation added.
