BUDGET 2025: Singapore commits to explore nuclear energy viability
Authorities will reorganize to provide greater emphasis to this work, said Wong.
Singapore has committed to studying the introduction of nuclear energy into its energy mix.
The government is planning to “take further steps to systematically build up” its capabilities in the area of nuclear energy, particularly small modular reactors (SMRs), said Prime Minister Lawrence Wong during the Budget 2025 on 18 February.
“We will reorganize to provide greater emphasis to this work,” Wong said in his speech, referring to nuclear energy, adding that their goal is to deploy nuclear energy in a safe and cost-effective way.
Singapore has topped up the Future Energy Fund by another $5b, bringing the total investment to $10b. The fund was established to support Singapore’s clean energy transition.
Wong noted that its regional peers Indonesia and Malaysia are introducing nuclear to their own energy mixes.
Singapore, meanwhile, already has cooperation agreements signed with the USA and other countries that have capabilities with civilian nuclear energy, he added.
