MSE proposes new bill to safeguard food security
It aims to consolidate and update existing food-related legislation.
The Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE) introduced the Food Safety and Security Bill (FSSB) for its first reading in Parliament on 13 Nov.
The bill aims to consolidate and update existing food-related legislation, strengthen Singapore’s food safety framework to enhance consumer protection and public health, and address emerging challenges in safeguarding food security.
Additionally, the FSSB will empower the Ministry of Health to promote better public health outcomes through improved diet and nutrition.
The bill's provisions have been shaped through extensive consultations with industry stakeholders since August 2023.
Public consultations were also conducted via REACH in phases between March and September 2024.
The government also said it has committed to further engaging the industry before implementing any new requirements under the FSSB.
