Six in 10 S’poreans at higher risk for developing diabetes complications
90% identified food as the most impactful factor on glucose levels.
More than half of Singaporeans (64%) said they are managing diabetes, but 60% of these individuals have high blood glucose levels associated with a higher risk for developing diabetes complications, according to an Abbott survey.
The report, which polled 352 respondents, found that 51% do not monitor glucose at home due to inconvenience (46%) or perceived lack of necessity (43%). Moreover, 90% identified food as the most impactful factor on glucose levels, with 74% saying they cut back on sweets and beverages after diagnosis.
Fewer people (40%) associated glucose impact with other food choices such as the reduction of carbohydrates (46%), processed food (43%), and the addition of protein-rich foods (30%).
The report emphasised the importance of portion control on glucose level awareness, however, only 1% do so.
Respondents said that they need to exercise more yet 80% said they do less than the recommended 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week. More senior citizens (29%) said they were doing the recommended exercise as compared to 17% of those under 60.
