Singapore lowers costs on defective vehicle replacements

Vehicle vendors can soon skip a few fees when replacing so-called lemon vehicles.

Under new proposed amendments to the Road Traffic Act, which were passed in Singapore parliament over the weekend, vendors will no longer have to spend on a new registration and certificate fees.

Instead, vendors will be allowed to transfer the Additional Registration Fee and Certificate of Entitlement from a defective vehicle to a replacement vehicle, said the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) in a release.

MTI said this was done to " assist motor traders to defray costs and encourage them to offer
replacements for lemon vehicles."

Defective vehicles, though, still have to meet the criteria on defective vehicles as stated in Singapore's existing consumer lemon laws to qualify for replacements.
