New pipeline to meet Central Region’s future water demand: PUB
It pays to be forward-looking.
The Murnane Service Reservoir will be providing water to the city’s Central Region through a 22-kilometre pipeline to be completed by 2019, the PUB announced on Monday.
PUB conducted several detailed feasibility studies and decided to lay half of the pipeline underneath the lower half of the Rail Corrdior. According to the announcement, the surface of this area will be maintained as a contiguous green space for public recreational use.
Tenders for a detailed engineering design and an environmental impact study will be called in July, the latter to recommend mitigation measures to minimise construction impact on the environment.
Construction of the pipeline is expected to start in 2016.
Here’s more from the announcement:
For the safety of the public, PUB will close off the stretch of Rail Corridor south of Holland Road from first half of 2016 as the pipeline is being laid. PUB will take appropriate measures such as hoarding of the work sites and provision of alternative access to minimise disruption to pedestrians and road users. These areas will be progressively re-opened in sections after the pipeline has been laid and the ground has been reinstated, so that it will be available for recreational uses such as jogging and cycling.
“We will work with various community members such as residents of nearby premises, rail corridor users and relevant interest groups at different stages of the project – from planning to construction – to ensure that this project, while ensuring water supply for the city area in the long term, will minimise any inconvenience to the community. After the pipeline has been laid, the surface of this stretch will be maintained as a contiguous green space for public recreational use,” said Mr Chew Men Leong, Chief Executive, PUB.
