ST Electronics bags three big time contracts

Its pockets are S$192m fatter..

According to the release, Singapore Technologies Electronics Limited (ST Electronics) today announced that it has secured about S$192m worth of contracts for rail electronics, intelligent transportation, satellite communications (Satcom) and smart utility projects in 4Q2012.

In October 2012, ST Electronics was awarded a contract by CTCI Corporation and Alstom Transport S.A. to provide an Automatic Fare Collection Systems for Taiwan’s Taichung Metropolitan Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Wurih-Wenxin Beitun Line.

Work on the 16.71km line and its 18 stations has commenced and is expected to be completed in 2017. ST Electronics has also secured a contract in Malaysia to implement a Facility SCADA (Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition) System for the Sungai Buloh-Kajang mass rapid transit line.

The contract was awarded by MRT Corporation Sdn Bhd to ST Electronics, in consortium with A.F.S. Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd.

The Facility SCADA system will be implemented for the 51km MRT line, which has 31 stations and 2 train depots. Work on the project has commenced and will be completed by July 2017.

In Singapore, the Land Transport Authority has awarded a S$34.5m contract to ST Electronics for the implementation of Phase 2 of the Expressway Monitoring & Advisory System (EMAS) on major arterial roads.

This contract win follows the successful commissioning of the Phase 1, EMAS Arterial project by ST Electronics for six major arterial roads in May 2012.

Phase 2 involves the expansion of the EMAS to four major arterial corridors in Singapore that serve as alternative routes to the expressways. This project is expected to be completed by 2014.

ST Electronics’ Satcom and Sensor business secured contracts worth about S$70m for the supply of Satcom Systems to customers worldwide in 4Q2012. These contracts are for the supply of products and network infrastructure including Agilis VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) and earth station equipment, satellite hubs and routers, cellular backhaul and maritime VSAT solutions.

It is noted in a recent COMSYS report that the company's iDirect products account for nearly half of all VSAT remote terminals installed in the maritime VSAT market, in which 14 of the largest 20 maritime service providers had adopted the company’s iDirect VSAT solutions.

Consequently, ST Electronics is the de-facto leader in providing satellite communications solutions to ground infrastructure providers and emerging as the platform of choice for high through put satellite communication services.

ST Electronics’ smart utilities solutions continue to make headway with its subsidiary, Telematics Wireless Ltd, being awarded a US$28m (about S$34.3m) contract by Arad Technologies Ltd (Arad). This contract calls for the supply of radio transceivers that will provide Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) capabilities to Arad's meters.

These radio transceivers are key components in smart AMR meters that enable utilities providers to remotely monitor their customer's water, electricity or gas usage. The AMR meters are able to give precise monitoring of all utility vital signs and provide alerts to faults, such as leakages and tampering. The company’s training and simulation business received a boost through the award of contracts in the fourth quarter of 2012.

ST Electronics will deliver specific electronic learning modules for the LEARNet programme to selected training institutes and units of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).

This involves the design, development and implementation of the e-learning content and infrastructure, as well as providing maintenance and support services.

These modules are expected to be completed in late 2013.
