Here's where Singapore falls short as a global city

It has to work on sustainability and liveability.

While it enjoys its overall global city ranking at second place next to London, Singapore still has to work on its flailing sustainability.

According to the latest 2016 Cities of Opportunity report by the PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC), the city-state has managed to climb to the second rank after finishing third in the previous study, recording three first position finish in three indicators including technology readiness, transportation & infrastructure, and ease of doing business.

However, the report noted that Singapore has fallen four places since 2014 in sustainability and the natural environment, finishing at 20th position this year behind its neighbors Seoul and Hong Kong.

"While the city’s harsh climate helps to explain its score in thermal comfort it is more difficult to account for its middling results in air pollution and recycled waste," the report noted.

Moreover, the Lion City remained in the middle of the road for demographics and liveability as it landed at 17th place.

"Entertainment and attractions, and the YouthfulCities index both turn out bottom 10 results. The city does have 2 top ten performances in relocation attractiveness and new measure, senior well being, but is middle of the pack or below in the other 5 variables," the report explained.

The City of Opportunity report analyzes the development of 30 global cities including Asian cities: Beijing, Dubai, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, Tokyo, and Mumbai.

The people you want to reach are already in this room.

Every quarter, SBR lands on the desks of the founders, CFOs, and directors running Asia's most consequential companies. Every day, they open our newsletter and read our website. It's a room that took twenty years to build — and it's the one most of our partners are trying to get into.

The good news is that the door is open. We work with companies on thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. The shape of the right partnership depends on what you're trying to do, which is why we'd rather start with a conversation than send a rate card.

If you have something this room should know about, tell us. We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how.

No rate cards until we understand the brief. It's a better use of everyone's time.
