Cars failed to save the day in February. Overall retail sales in Singapore booked a 3.2% year-on-year drop in February, despite a staggering 51.3% surge in motor vehicle sales.

Data from the Department of Statistics show that excluding motor vehicle sales, the drop in retail sales would have been more severe at 9.6% year-on-year.

On a month-on-month basis, retail sales rose 1.7% in February. Excluding motor vehicles, sales dropped 1.1%.

The total retail sales value in February 2016 was estimated at $3.4 billion, lower than $3.5 billion in February 2015.

Meanwhile, sales of food & beverage services increased 0.3% month-on-month in February. Sales dropped 1.9% on a year-on-year basis, with total sales value slipping to $677 million from $690 million.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

The people you want to reach are already in this room.

Every quarter, SBR lands on the desks of the founders, CFOs, and directors running Asia's most consequential companies. Every day, they open our newsletter and read our website. It's a room that took twenty years to build — and it's the one most of our partners are trying to get into.

The good news is that the door is open. We work with companies on thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. The shape of the right partnership depends on what you're trying to do, which is why we'd rather start with a conversation than send a rate card.

If you have something this room should know about, tell us. We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how.

No rate cards until we understand the brief. It's a better use of everyone's time.
