Singapore named WMO Southeast Asia haze control centre host

Singapore has also housed the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre since 1993.

Singapore has been chosen to host the World Meteorological Organisation’s (WMO) Southeast Asian control centre for forest fire and smoke pollution forecasts, enhancing the region's ability to monitor transboundary haze.

The centre, one of the first two globally, will conduct atmospheric smoke haze dispersion modelling, enabling governments to take preventive measures.

Singapore has also housed the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) since 1993, which provides regional weather, climate, and haze assessments, and strengthens monitoring through research and development.

A dedicated website will offer forecasts, satellite images, hotspots, sub-seasonal outlooks, and fire risk data from the Malaysian Meteorological Department.

Earlier this year, the Centre for Climate Research Singapore completed its third national climate change study to help the region develop climate adaptation strategies.

The country has also signed a memorandum of understanding with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation to assess climate risks to food production and enhance agri-food resilience.

In addition to ASMC, Singapore plays an active role in the WMO, serving on the Executive Council and Management Group for Regional Association 5 Southwest Pacific, and hosting the WMO's regional office since 2018.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

The people you want to reach are already in this room.

Every quarter, SBR lands on the desks of the founders, CFOs, and directors running Asia's most consequential companies. Every day, they open our newsletter and read our website. It's a room that took twenty years to build — and it's the one most of our partners are trying to get into.

The good news is that the door is open. We work with companies on thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. The shape of the right partnership depends on what you're trying to do, which is why we'd rather start with a conversation than send a rate card.

If you have something this room should know about, tell us. We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how.

No rate cards until we understand the brief. It's a better use of everyone's time.
