ACEN, Marubeni partners to develop an offshore wind project in Australia

The partnership is expected to invest $218.3 to the project.

Ayala Group consortium, ACEN Australia, signed a cooperation agreement with Marubeni Asian Power Singapore for the joint development of a 200 MW/400 MWh (2-hour) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in New South Wales, Australia.

Under the agreement, both parties will work together to deliver the New England 400 MWh BESS. The 50/50 joint project is expected to invest $218.3m (AU$250m) to be completed by 2025.

The New England Solar is currently being built in stages near Uralla in New South Wales (NSW). Stage 1 of the solar facility (400 MW) generated clean, renewable electricity into NSW and Queensland in 2023. Stage 2 will begin construction in 2024.

This partnership marks the initial stage of the 200 MW  battery with potential for future expansion. The project is supported by host landholders, First Nations, and the Uralla community.

Transgrid’s Lumea will connect the grid-forming BESS to the grid, supporting a secure energy supply as the network transitions from aging coal fire power stations to new renewable generation and energy storage.
