Haw Par's net profits inch up 1.8% to $182m in 2019

Revenue increased 2.6% to $243m due to higher healthcare arm sales in H1 2019.

Multi-industry firm Haw Par’s net profit crept up 1.8% to $182m in 2019 from $179m the previous year, according to an SGX filing.

Revenue increased 2.6% to $243m from $237m in 2018, anchored by higher sales in its healthcare arm in the first half of 2019. However, gross profit margin fell from 61.3% to 57.2% as sales costs soared 13.5% to $104.5m in H2 2019.

Earnings per share went up $82.4 cents.

Healthcare revenue went up 3.3% to $224m due to growth in most markets during H1 2019, partially offset by lower demand in certain markets in H2, when profits declined 3.2% to $74.8m.

Haw Par’s property and leisure segment posted a 4.3% decrease in revenue to $20m mainly due to lower occupancy, partially counteracted by increase in revenue in Underwater World Pattaya due to higher visitorship. Profits fell 12.2% to $10.8m, impacted by lower rental income.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

The people you want to reach are already in this room.

Every quarter, SBR lands on the desks of the founders, CFOs, and directors running Asia's most consequential companies. Every day, they open our newsletter and read our website. It's a room that took twenty years to build — and it's the one most of our partners are trying to get into.

The good news is that the door is open. We work with companies on thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. The shape of the right partnership depends on what you're trying to do, which is why we'd rather start with a conversation than send a rate card.

If you have something this room should know about, tell us. We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how.

No rate cards until we understand the brief. It's a better use of everyone's time.
