APAC’s antimicrobial resistance-related costs to reach $904b by 2050
Investment in AMR solutions could generate US$10 to 15b in annual healthcare savings.
In Asia Pacific, antimicrobial resistance-related costs are projected to reach up to $904b (US$700b) by 2050, accounting for up to 1% of the region’s gross domestic product according to a report by The Centre for Impact Investing and Practices and the World Economic Forum.
In 2021, AMR caused 4.7 million deaths annually and is estimated to become the leading cause of death by 2050, claiming more than 8 million lives and surpassing cancer.
Beyond health, it threatens global food systems by reducing global livestock production and polluting waterways.
However, the report noted that timely investment in AMR solutions could generate $12.9b (US$10b) to $19.4b (US$15b) in annual healthcare savings and cut annual socio-economic costs by up to US$40b in the region.
