Genting Singapore prowling for new venture in Japan

But here's what's holding it back.

According to DBS, while GENS is ready to bid in Japan, it remains to be seen whether Japan can be a lucrative market given no clarity on tax rates and regulations (any restrictions on locals will make Japan less attractive given relatively low tourist arrivals).

Japan’s gaming legislation may be introduced in 2 parts - Part 1 (as early as end-2013) will likely approve IRs in certain perfectures while details will be unveiled in Part 2 (12 months thereafter).

"Hence, bidding process is expected to take place only in 2016. In the meantime, GENS is eyeing other Asia ventures which may materialise within the next 6-12 months. Funding is not an issue given GENS’ US$1.5bn net cash and healthy operating cashflows (US$1.2b p.a.)," DBS said.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

If you've been wondering whether SBR could work for your company — yes, probably.

A lot of the companies we partner with started as readers. They'd been following our coverage for a while, saw their own customers and competitors in it, and eventually asked the obvious question: could we do something with you? The answer is usually yes. The shape of it depends on what you're trying to do.

The options are broader than most people assume — thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. Some partners use one channel; most use a mix. We figure out the right combination by starting with your brief, not with our rate card.

So if the question has been on your mind, here's the easy way to ask it.

We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how. It's a better use of everyone's time.
