Non-linear career paths gain traction amongst Singapore professionals

Seven in 10 say they will choose a different industry or job role in their next career move.

More Singaporeans are planning to take on a non-linear career path, with 71% of professionals saying they will choose a different industry or job role for their next career move.

Data from LinkedIn showed that the top motivator for professionals to explore a different career path is their desire to explore other interests (42%).

Professionals believe taking a different career path also adds to their experience and makes them more attractive candidates (40%).

Some, meanwhile, pursue a role or industry different from their usual because of better growth prospects (40%).

Those planning to make a career move, however, are finding job hunting tough, with 60% saying that looking for a job is frustrating.

As job search becomes harder, professionals are changing their job search approach to stand out.

Over one in two (52%) professionals said they have changed their job search approach, such as experimenting with new formats like video and digital resumes.

Some are using AI, with 62% of professionals saying it can help make their job hunt more efficient and productive.

Professionals are also investing in building their professional brand and tapping connections that can help them increase their chances of landing a job, with 48% posting more content on LinkedIn and more than half becoming more active in growing their professional network.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

The people you want to reach are already in this room.

Every quarter, SBR lands on the desks of the founders, CFOs, and directors running Asia's most consequential companies. Every day, they open our newsletter and read our website. It's a room that took twenty years to build — and it's the one most of our partners are trying to get into.

The good news is that the door is open. We work with companies on thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. The shape of the right partnership depends on what you're trying to do, which is why we'd rather start with a conversation than send a rate card.

If you have something this room should know about, tell us. We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how.

No rate cards until we understand the brief. It's a better use of everyone's time.
