NTUC voices concern over Ninja Van and Yahoo layoffs before May Day

The union emphasised the importance of timing layoffs.

The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) voiced disappointment with Yahoo and Ninja Van for their layoffs just before May Day, emphasising the significance of this day in honouring workers' contributions to Singapore’s economy.

Whilst understanding the necessity of corporate restructuring, the union emphasised the importance of timing for its implementation.

On April 29th, reports indicated that Yahoo would lay off 17 workers from its editorial and social media teams in Singapore. Additionally, on April 30th, reports confirmed that Ninja Van is retrenching 21 employees from its tech division in the city-state.

“In the event of retrenchment, companies must ensure openness, transparency and consultation with unions and workers and observe the guiding principles outlined in NTUC’s Fair Retrenchment Framework and the Tripartite Advisory on Managing Excess Manpower and Responsible Retrenchment,” the congress emphasised.

Both Yahoo and Ninja Van are not unionised.

NTUC said its affiliated unions, the Creative Media and Publishing Union (CMPU) and the Supply Chain Employees’ Union (SCEU), will contact general branch members to support affected workers.
