M1 to launch trial of Nokia's first 5G small cell in SEA by 4Q 2018

The project will provide a 4.5 Heterogenous Network throughout traffic hotspots across Singapore.

M1 partnered with Nokia to launch its first 5G small cell trial in Southeast Asia in the fourth quarter of 2018. They will also push for 5G use in selected vertical industries which require small cell capacity and very low latency Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity, an announcement revealed.

The project is set to deploy an extensive 4.5G Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) at traffic hotspots throughout Singapore.

“With M1’s NB-IoT network and largest HetNet deployment nationwide today, we are well positioned to harness exciting new 5G capabilities and support extremely reliable and highly responsive advanced network infrastructure on our dense cell grid architecture,” M1 Chief Technical Officer Denis Seek said.

In 2017, M1 and Nokia carried out Southeast Asia’s first nationwide commercial Narrowband-Internet of Things (NB-IoT) network to support Singapore’s transformation into a Smart Nation.
