Cybercriminals exploit GSS frenzy to steal user data: Kaspersky

The scams range from fake e-commerce websites that take payments for non-existent goods to phishing pages.

Cybercriminals are exploiting the buzz of the Great Singapore Sale (GSS) to launch a wave of phishing scams, according to cybersecurity firm Kaspersky.

In a statement, Kaspersky revealed that scammers are impersonating well-known platforms like Lazada, TikTok Shop, and Zalora, as well as trusted brands such as Timberland, to deceive online shoppers during the sale season.

The scams range from fake e-commerce websites that take payments for non-existent goods to phishing pages designed to steal login credentials by mimicking legitimate platforms. Even local entrepreneurs are being targeted, the firm said.

Fraudulent TikTok Shop pages, for example, are reportedly tricking small business owners into handing over sensitive personal and financial information under the pretense of applying to join the platform as sellers.

To help consumers avoid falling prey, Kaspersky recommended verifying deals through official websites, checking URLs carefully, using trusted payment methods, and avoiding suspiciously low prices.
