Daily Markets Briefing: STI down 0.14%

Do not expect boosts today.

The Straits Times Index (STI) ended 4.41 points or 0.14% lower to 3228.06, taking the year-to-date performance to +12.06%.

The top active stocks today were DBS, which closed unchanged, Global Logistic, which gained 0.61%, Ascendas REIT, which gained 0.75%, Singtel, which declined 0.54% and UOB, with a 0.09% fall.

The FTSE ST Mid Cap Index declined 0.30%, while the FTSE ST Small Cap Index rose 0.26%.

According to OCBC Investment Research, US stock indexes ended slightly lower Thursday as investors sold financials, consumer-discretionary, and telecommunication shares, with Disney and Goldman Sachs exacting a hefty toll on the Dow industrials.

Three out of eleven S&P 500 industries finished lower, led by Telecommunication Services (-2.08%) and Financials (-1.65%) while Health Care (1.09%) and Real Estate (0.76%) led the gains.

"The muted showings on Wall Street overnight are unlikely to provide much of boost to the local bourse today," OCBC said.
