Australia, Singapore fund $20m maritime emissions research
The projects are expected to be completed within two years.
Australia and Singapore have selected eight research projects to receive funding under a $16.9m (AU$20m) initiative to reduce emissions in the maritime sector.
The Australia-Singapore Initiative on Low Emissions Technologies (ASLET) aligns with the broader goals of the Green and Digital Shipping Corridor (GDSC) between the two nations, supporting efforts to decarbonise and digitise shipping routes.
ASLET, jointly administered by Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority (MPA), was launched in July 2024 to accelerate the adoption of zero or near-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emission technologies in maritime and port operations.
The initiative received 32 applications from universities, research institutes, and industry players across both countries. The eight selected projects focus on innovations in hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol supply chains, as well as electrification, environmental monitoring, and safety measures in maritime operations.
The projects, which have also secured additional co-funding, are expected to be completed within two years.
