Shell pipeline leaks oil into Singapore’s Bukom Island

Clean-up operations commenced following the detection of the spill.

An oil leak from a Shell land-based pipeline between Bukom Island and Bukom Kecil was detected on 20 October at around 5:30 am.

Later that day, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) was alerted to the incident at 1:00 pm. The leak was reported to have been stopped at its source.

MPA deployed seven craft equipped with dispersants, along with vessels from its contractor, Singapore Salvage Engineers. Shell also deployed additional craft and placed containment booms at the site to assist in cleaning up the oil.

In addition, MPA has also activated drones and satellite capabilities to assist with the detection of the oil spill. Relevant government agencies have been alerted to report any oil sightings. There have been no new oil sightings as of 6:00 pm.

Meanwhile, MPA’s Port Operations Control Centre stated that there is no impact on navigational safety. It has issued navigational safety broadcasts advising passing vessels to steer clear of the site.
