Canon Singapore Pte. Ltd. wins at SBR Technology Excellence Awards 2025

The company earned recognition for revolutionising safety compliance in aviation with its Workplace AI.

Canon Singapore Pte. Ltd. bagged the Facial Recognition - Aviation accolade at the SBR Technology Excellence Awards 2025, being recognised for its video analytics solution, Workplace AI.

The benefits of using Workplace AI were evident in an aerospace manufacturing company whose workplace safety was enhanced after the deployment of the advanced system. This system is integrated with the company’s existing surveillance cameras to detect and address safety violations in real time.

Driven by a commitment to raising safety standards and streamlining operations, the company set out to find a solution that aligned with its long-term objectives. They found the perfect solution in Workplace AI, which offers continuous and real-time monitoring through existing cameras.

The system, powered by edge based AI, boasts features including identifying safety violations like missing protective gear, unsafe road behaviour, and hazardous work conditions. This approach has so far resulted in faster intervention and better oversight.

Workplace AI is powered by adaptive machine learning, designed to respond to real-world environments. During its initial deployment at the aerospace company’s facility, the system learned the site’s specific conditions and was further fine-tuned through collaborative consultations to recognise its unique operational patterns. This tailored, self-learning approach enabled Workplace AI to enhance detection accuracy whilst significantly reducing false alarms, ensuring alignment with the company’s stringent safety protocols.

The system was deployed across various strategically positioned cameras within a key facility. It monitored essential safety parameters such as workers crossing roads without wearing safety vests; identifying workers standing under suspended loads or ensuring safety harnesses are worn when working at heights; ensuring vehicles reverse safely with a banksman present; and monitoring unauthorised road crossings.

It also gives alerts to vehicles failing to stop at pedestrian crossings or potential road hazards and identifies unauthorised access to restricted areas.

Whenever a safety violation is detected, the system automatically sends an email alert to the administrative team with video snapshots for quick review. All incidents are logged, creating a detailed audit trail for trend analysis, compliance tracking, and safety training.

The introduction of Workplace AI has reduced the need for manual supervision and has allowed staff to focus on other critical tasks. By integrating with the company’s existing infrastructure, the system also minimises the need for additional investments.

After the favourable outcome of the implementation of Workplace AI, the company is already planning to expand the use of the advanced system to other areas within its facilities.

Canon Singapore’s Senior Vice President, Norihiro (Nick) Katagiri, said, “The way we engage with customers goes beyond delivering hardware and services; it’s about being a trusted partner in their digital transformation journey. In high-stakes industries like aviation and manufacturing, where safety, efficiency, and compliance are mission-critical, transformation is no longer optional. It is essential to building resilience in the face of disruption. At Canon, we see technology as an enabler, one that empowers organisations to adapt swiftly, make smarter decisions and create safer, more efficient workplaces that are ready for the future.”

Future upgrade options are available to the customer, including the integration of sirens and strobe lights to provide immediate alerts in the event of safety violations. The company is also exploring enhancements to the system’s monitoring capabilities to detect unauthorised access in restricted areas. The system is scalable as Workplace AI could be integrated with smart facility management systems to enable more automated and proactive safety enforcement. As part of the Smart Tech suite, Workplace AI is helping companies like this aerospace leader take workplace safety to the next level, driving both operational efficiency and enhanced safety compliance.
