A sneak peek at Moser’s new gold-rated Singapore office

Find out how the 1980s-vintage of the base building was turned into a multi-functional office with a LEED Gold certification.

Moser’s design team capitalized the space’s virtues which include a long, extensively glazed external wall and a ‘wedge’ floor plate to neutralise its perceived drawbacks. The ‘wedge’ floor plate was organised almost concentrically, with front-of-house functions concentrated near the entranceway at the ‘point’ of the shape. The work area ebbs out from there in a widening arc that reaches the glazed external wall.

The internally illuminated reception desk and a back-illuminated ceiling at the reception area instantly ‘repaints’ the space to suit different occasions and times of day.

“The whole space around it is multifunctional – it serves as a staff area, presentation area, town hall session area, etc,” Stephen Lyon, Head of Office, M Moser Singapore explains. “Some of the books from our library are there, and we’ve also got a Wii station for people to use during their lunchtimes or after work.”

The focal point of the workspace comprises two hexagonal-plan desk islands. Up to 18 staff can be accommodated at each, with the arrangement (and vestigial partitioning) ensuring that every person is within visual and vocal range of fellow team members. Complementing the foci is a long, continuous ‘hot desking’ bench built against the perimeter wall.

The space achieved a LEED Gold Certification for its work areas that are awash in natural light during daytime, considerably reducing the need for electricity-hungry artificial lighting. When more illumination is needed, efficient LED task lighting is used for individual workstations. Programmable timers and daylight and motion sensors meanwhile allows for precise control of the office’s general lighting, ensuring that it remains on only when the space is actually in use.

Global firm M Moser’s new office is a 6,535 sq-ft space on the second floor of the AXA Tower.
