Daily Briefing: SIA challenged by air capacity woes; Dairy Farm beats Sheng Siong in profitability

And here's a local fashion brand that saw revenue grow to $10m thanks to e-commerce.

Love, Bonito has become a household name over the years, proving that it’s not some obscure local fashion brand.

Founded by three friends – Rachel Lim, Viola Tan and Velda Tan (the latter two are sisters) – the brand started off as a blogshop called Bonito Chico in 2005.

E-commerce was still at a very nascent stage a decade ago, and they are one of the pioneers to start the blogshop trend in Singapore.

For every dollar of revenue generated by Dairy Farm, the company turned about four cents into profit. But for Sheng Siong, each dollar of revenue became nearly eight cents in profit. This shows that Sheng Siong is more profitable than Dairy Farm. However, Dairy Farm has a higher gross margin and ROE than Sheng Siong.

Singapore Airlines Ltd.’s chief executive officer said that surplus capacity in the industry remains a challenge and the marquee carrier’s focus continues to be on delivering cost-efficient services.

The group is in the midst of a review to fend off intensifying competition from Middle Eastern carriers at the premium end and low-cost operators at the budget end. The transformation may include job cuts, the company said in June, and two months later it offered its cabin crew three months of voluntary unpaid leave.
