Energy ffficiency index falls to 49, signalling gains despite higher emissions

Emissions climbed to 616 million tonnes in 2021 from 440 million tonnes in 2000.

Singapore’s energy efficiency index improved to 49 in 2021, down from 67.8 in 2000, reflecting stronger efficiency gains, according to the Asian Productivity Organization (APO).

In its Productivity Outlook 2026, the APO said this progress occurred despite a rise in carbon emissions, which climbed to 616 million tonnes from 440 million tonnes over the same period. The trend highlights a long-term trend of enhanced efficiency despite rising emissions.

Efficiency gains were also achieved against a backdrop of unchanged urbanisation at 100% and a decline in gross capital formation to 24.0% in 2021, from 35.2% in 2000, underscoring structural resilience in driving productivity improvements.
