Parliament urges proactive support for seniors through Age Well SG
Around 100,000 seniors are expected to face mild disability by 2030.
Legislators urged the government to proactively support senior citizens through Age Well SG, particularly those at risk of social isolation, to prevent health decline and disability.
In a report, the Estimates Committee highlighted that around 100,000 seniors are projected to experience at least mild disability by 2030, likely requiring assistance with at least one activity of daily living.
Part of the Age Well SG’s initiatives is to expand to 220 active ageing centres (AACs) by 2025 with initiatives to support and retain manpower, competitive salaries, and volunteer support.
Additionally, the committee encouraged the Ministry of Health to maintain efforts to recruit and retain healthcare workers, given the significant demographic shift Singapore is undergoing.
The committee also called on the government to ensure that seniors and their caregivers in private estates have access to elderly-friendly facilities and services.
The committee further recommended publishing the Action Plans for Successful Ageing report every five years or less.
