Physical wellness top factor for happy retirement: survey
Only 47% feel optimistic about achieving their desired lifestyle.
Physical wellness has emerged as the top factor for a happy retirement, cited by 46% of Singapore residents, according to findings from the eighth edition of the AIA Live Better Study, released by AIA Singapore
The study found that two in five respondents (40%) expect to spend time managing health conditions in their later years.
The firm also noted whilst many now view retirement as a period for reinvention and purpose, only 47% feel optimistic about achieving their desired lifestyle.
About 55% plan to continue working after retirement, though just 28% cite financial necessity, with others motivated by purpose (27%), combating boredom (26%), or trying something new (18%).
The study also pointed to financial concerns as a major hurdle, with only half of the respondents feeling financially stable. The cost of living (62%) and healthcare expenses (54%) ranked as top worries, particularly among those in their 40s, who expressed the most negative outlook on retirement (29%).
Beyond financial and physical health, the report flagged social wellness as an overlooked pillar. Whilst 61% linked a happy retirement to spending time with family and 41% with friends, only 37% have actively planned for social well-being.
Married individuals (53%) were more positive about retirement than singles (36%), who were more concerned about caregiving gaps, isolation, and cognitive decline.
