Changi Airport T2 multi-year expansion to begin by late January

The revamped terminal will include more greenery interiors and self-service travel options.

Changi Airport Group (CAG) announced today that expansion and renovation works at Terminal 2 (T2) will commence after the Chinese New Year holidays, beginning with check-in rows 9 to 12 in the Departure Hall, revealed in its press release.

The renovation by late January marks the start of a multi-year expansion project, which will add 15,500 sqm to the terminal building.

The airport revealed that the refreshed T2 will still incorporate Changi’s signature garden theme in its terminals, which will sport even more greenery and natural elements. The company also shared that the project will see the upgrade of T2’s particular navigation points to fulfil better automation systems.

The Orchid Garden, which stood at the Departure transit hall since 1997, will be replaced to showcase a new garden and add new plant species.

A garden-like lounge will be built at the arrival hall, whilst the food street areas along the Departure Transit Hall will be revamped to have green walls, hanging plants and soft lighting. At the same, more F&B kiosks options will be brought in, along with additional seating and a newly curated tenant mix for an enhanced dining experience.

Along with the airport’s plan to build a better automation system within the terminal, the Departure Hall will feature a common-use central Fast and Seamless Travel (FAST) zone, with more automated check-in kiosks and bag drop machines.

The Early Baggage Storage system, on the other hand will be upgraded from semi-automated to fully-automated, allowing some 2,300 bags to be stored at any time.

Last refurbished in 2006, T2’s expansion project is expected to grow Changi airport’s capacity by five million passengers per annum (mppa). This will bring Changi’s total capacity to 90 mppa when the works are completed around 2024.
