Budget 2026: NTUC urges job security as 56% of PMEs seek upskilling
AI disruption remains a real concern for workers.
The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) has urged measures to strengthen job security and transition support for professionals, managers and executives (PMEs) ahead of Budget 2026.
Over half (56%) of PMEs feel the need to upskill to remain relevant amidst technological shifts, according to an NTUC survey.
In line with this, the disruption from artificial intelligence remains a real concern for workers, said NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng.
“Our PMEs are prepared to adapt, but they need timely training and tangible support, both in employment and in the event of retrenchment, so that they do not have to navigate these challenges alone,” Ng added.
The NTUC Secretary-General, along with Labour Members of Parliament, is proposing earlier retrenchment notices with stronger employer-led support in Budget 2026 to help affected employees find new jobs sooner.
The union is also urging the government to expand existing initiatives such as the ‘Jobseeker Support Scheme’, as workers face increasing job disruptions linked to economic and technological changes.
