Chart of the day: Salary disputes drop in 2021

Approximately 84% of salary claims were resolved that year.

This chart from the Employment Standard Report 2021 shows that salary claims dispute dropped to 1.43 per 1,000 employees in 2021.

Local salary disputes fell to 1.16 per 1,000 local employees partly driven by a drop in salary claims lodged by local employees in the Services sector such as Accodomation & Food Service Activities and Wholesale & Retail Trade which saw significant improvements during the economic growth in 2021, based on the survey by the Ministry of Trade and Industry Singapore.

The report also revealed that 92% of total salary claims lodged in 2021 were about basic salary, salary-in-lieu of notice, encashment of unconsumed annual leave, and salary for overtime work.

Meanwhile, the Tripartite Alliance for Dispute Management (TADM) reported that more than nine in 10 claims were concluded expeditiously within two months, with the remaining referred to the Employment Claims Tribunals (ECT) for adjudication. This was similar to the proportion in 2020
