Desktops ain't gonna say goodbye

The overall desktop PC market is gasping but remains alive.

Many have long predicted the death of desktop PC market especially to first world countries like Singapore with the rise of portable computers but up to now it continues to prove them wrong thanks to all-in-one (AIO) desktops which sustain iits performance, said GFK Asia.

According to the research firm, the overall desktop PC in Singapore dropped by 10% in terms of the number of units sold to 28,953 in the first half of 2011 compared to the same period a year ago. It was valued at $36.98 million. But, AIO grew 6% in absolute units and took up 28% share of the total desktop PC. AIO units sold amounted to $13.9 million.

“Tower Desktop has 174 models in 2010 but dropped to 136 models in 2011. Only 28 were new models rolled out in 2011. In the same period, there was an increase in AIO models from 63 to 89. Out of 89 models, 49 are new models rolled out in 2011. This shows that manufacturers are focusing more on AIO to offer a wider range for consumers,” noted GFK in an e-mail response.

“The outlook for AIO desktop remains positive with the drop in their average price and the gap with tower PC narrowing from S$609 to S$569. Among the AIOs, AIO Core I5 grew the most during the 6-month period with a drop of average price from S$2,877 to S$1,970. The price difference between AIO Core I5 and Tower is only S$563 when compared to Core I3 which is valued at S$623,” it added.
