Is data centre expansion a new investment focus?

New survey shows Singaporeans and other Asian managers are splurging on data centre space.

This year a total of 76% of respondents have definite or probable plans of expanding thier data centre infrastructure, according to the independent survey by research firm Campos Research & Analysis for Digital Realty.

48% of those considering new data centre projects would want to extend it to more than one location.

Hotspots for data centre locations include Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo and Sydney.

The past two years also saw 64% of respondents completing a new data centre.

"We believe this growth is primarily being driven by global enterprises seeking to establish or expand their technical operations in the Asia Pacific region, as well as by companies based in the region with expanding computing requirements to support their rapid growth," said Kris Kumar, Regional Head, Asia Pacific at Digital Realty.

Still, not everyone seems to feel the need to with 17% of respondents having no data centre projects in the next couple of years.

The survey interviewed senior decision makers at large corporations in Singapore, Australia and Hong Kong.
