Market Update: STI ends trading week with gains, maintaining at 3,000-point level
The Straits Times Index extended its gains for three trading days, ending Friday's trading at 3,004.87 up by 4.87 points or 0.16%.
Market sentiment remained optimistic as US President-elect Joe Biden unveiled a US$1.9-trillion economic rescue plan for the US economy.
Advancers outnumbering decliners on Singapore's main index, 289 to 202 with about 4.2-billion securities worth S$1.54-billion changing hands.
Top gainers for the day were Jardine Strategic with a 3.01% or US$0.79 gain, Keppel DC REIT up by 2.52% or S$0.07, and CityDev which went higher by S$0.10 or 1.32%.
On Wall Street, US stocks were in bright red on Friday as unemployment compensation claims have jumped sharply with the pandemic weighing on the economy.
S&P 500 closed down 0.72% or 27.29 points at 3,768.25. NASDAQ also lowered by 0.87% or 114.13 points to 12,998.50 while Dow Jones Industrial had a downturn by 177.26 points or 0.57% at 30,814.26.
Meanwhile, London listed shares went back in the red. FTSE 100 shed 66.25 points or 0.97% ending at 6,735.71 while FTSE 250 ended lower by 0.77% or 160.16 points at 20,615.59.
