Chee warns boards against complacency as SGX levels hit record highs

SID rolled out a Board Academy and a Value Unlock grant scheme to boost investor engagement, Chee said.

Singapore needs to focus on strengthening the fundamentals and capabilities of its capital markets, even as market levels remain near record highs, Senior Minister of State for Finance Chee Hong Tat said at the launch of the Singapore Institute of Directors (SID) Chairpersons Guild.

Chee said the new Guild can help uplift the listed-company ecosystem by promoting collective responsibility among chairpersons, particularly as global capital markets become more competitive.

He emphasised the importance of strong corporate governance in building investor trust, alongside continuous board capability-building and clear strategic direction from boards.

He said the Monetary Authority of Singapore is working with the Corporate Governance Advisory Committee to review the Code of Corporate Governance, to sharpen its focus on what matters most to investors and encourage more meaningful disclosures beyond boilerplate statements.

Chee also announced the launch of initiatives to strengthen board and company capabilities, including the SID Board Academy and the Value Unlock programme, which provides grants to improve investor engagement and shareholder value creation.

He added that transparent and well-prepared forward-looking disclosures are permissible and encouraged, with further regulatory guidance to be issued by SGX RegCo.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

If you've been wondering whether SBR could work for your company — yes, probably.

A lot of the companies we partner with started as readers. They'd been following our coverage for a while, saw their own customers and competitors in it, and eventually asked the obvious question: could we do something with you? The answer is usually yes. The shape of it depends on what you're trying to do.

The options are broader than most people assume — thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. Some partners use one channel; most use a mix. We figure out the right combination by starting with your brief, not with our rate card.

So if the question has been on your mind, here's the easy way to ask it.

We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how. It's a better use of everyone's time.
