EMA, SP Group work on Singapore’s grid capabilities roadmap

They also teamed up to study virtual power plants.

The Energy Market Authority (EMA) has collaborated with SP Group to develop a Future Grid Capabilities Roadmap that will identify key challenges and focus areas to enhance Singapore’s electricity grid to manage new complexities.

In a statement, EMA said the partnership will involve harnessing distributed energy resources (DER) to enhance grid resilience, enhance grid planning, control and maintenance efforts such as through the development of digital solutions, and explore solutions to maintain grid stability whilst increasing renewables capacity

The roadmap will be launched later this year and will serve as a guide to building Singapore’s grid capabilities through research and development, pilot projects, and deployment efforts.

EMA has also launched a Consultation Paper and Call for Regulatory Sandbox Proposals to explore the benefits of virtual power plant (VPP), a digital platform capable of controlling, optimising, and aggregating a network of DERs across various locations.

To support this, EMA has inked a memorandum of understanding with SP Group to collaborate on the research and development for a VPP to participate in the regulatory sandbox.

This will involve the deployment of a 15-megawatt VPP comprising DERs such as solar photovoltaic sources and battery energy storage system in the initial phase. This will participate in the electricity market to evaluate its benefits to the power system.

Proposals for the VPP sandbox may be submitted until 31 December 2024.

A NOTE FROM SINGAPORE BUSINESS REVIEW

The people you want to reach are already in this room.

Every quarter, SBR lands on the desks of the founders, CFOs, and directors running Asia's most consequential companies. Every day, they open our newsletter and read our website. It's a room that took twenty years to build — and it's the one most of our partners are trying to get into.

The good news is that the door is open. We work with companies on thought leadership articles, sponsored content, industry summits across Southeast Asia, regional awards programmes, podcasts, and media placements in print and digital. The shape of the right partnership depends on what you're trying to do, which is why we'd rather start with a conversation than send a rate card.

If you have something this room should know about, tell us. We'll tell you honestly whether we can help, and how.

No rate cards until we understand the brief. It's a better use of everyone's time.
