Manufacturers innovate, reformulate drinks to meet Nutri-Grade labelling regulations

The Grade-labelling identifies beverages based on their sugar and saturated fat content.

Several beverage manufacturers in Singapore have taken steps to redesign their labels and reformulate their beverages to benefit from health claims following the mandatory introduction of "Nutri-Grade" labelling regulations, according to a report by GlobalData.

These regulations were introduced on December 30, 2022, to encourage consumers to make informed choices by identifying less healthy beverages with high sugar and saturated fat content. Beverages will now be rated according to their sugar and saturated fat content, and classified into four-colour coded grades, from A to D, with D being the unhealthiest.

Suneera Joseph, a Consumer Analyst at GlobalData, has stated that the new ‘Nutri-Grade’ grading system is part of a broader national effort to tackle diabetes and obesity in Singapore. The new regulation applies to all sugar-sweetened beverages, including fruit juices, milk, yoghurt drinks, and powdered dilutable. Manufacturers have taken the opportunity to reformulate their beverages to comply with the new labelling regulations and benefit from health claims.

The Nutri-Grade labeling regulations form part of Singapore's broader efforts to tackle obesity and diabetes in the country. Health concerns are prompting consumers to seek greater transparency on labels, playing a significant role in their decision-making, GlobalData said.

With the colour coding and rating system, consumers can quickly and easily understand nutrition claims and identify healthier options that meet their dietary needs, it added.

The new labelling system is seen as a gentler approach to reducing sugar consumption compared to the sugar tax, which is associated with increased prices. By reformulating their beverages, manufacturers can ensure that they meet the criteria for healthier grades and benefit from health claims while also aligning with the health and wellness trend.

The introduction of Nutri-Grade labellingregulations is expected to encourage innovation in the beverage industry and increase the number of healthier drink options available to consumers.
