MPA, Shell partner for maritime decarbonisation efforts

Both companies will collaborate on advancing electric boats and developing low-and-zero-carbon fuels.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Shell Eastern Trading Pte Ltd signed a five-year memorandum of understanding (MoU), expanding their collaboration on the maritime decarbonisation efforts in Singapore.

As part of the MoU, the companies will work together and identify energy-related development opportunities to advance the adoption of the electric harbour craft, including collaborative efforts on charging infrastructure for these electric-powered boats.

They will also cooperate on the research and development of low-and-zero-carbon fuels and training of the crew that handles, operates, and maintains the vehicles that run on such fuels.

Teo Eng Din, MPA Chief Executive, said that the MoU is "an important step towards achieving our 2030 goal for all new harbour craft to be fully electric, be capable of using 100% biofuels or be compatible with net zero fuels, and achieving net zero emissions in our harbour craft, pleasure craft, and tugboat sectors by 2050.
