PM Lawrence Wong retains role as finance minister

He also appointed nine new political office holders.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has confirmed he will retain his role as minister for finance, underscoring the importance of steady financial leadership during a period of global economic uncertainty.

In announcing his new Cabinet line-up, Wong cited the need for experienced ministers to navigate challenges such as rising trade barriers, sharper competition, and greater unpredictability on the world stage.

“We need experienced hands at the helm. So I’m keeping most of the Ministers in their current roles during this critical period,” he said.

Promotions
* Faishal Ibrahim, Murali Pillai, and Sun Xueling are promoted to senior ministers of state.
* Baey Yam Keng is promoted to minister of state.

New coordinating ministers and ministerial changes
* K Shanmugam becomes coordinating minister for national security and remains minister for home affairs, while stepping down as minister for law.
* Chan Chun Sing is appointed coordinating minister for public services and minister for defence, relinquishing his role in education.
* Ong Ye Kung becomes coordinating minister for social policies and continues as minister for health and minister-in-charge of ageing issues.
* Desmond Lee moves to become minister for education, stepping down from national development but continuing to lead social services integration.
* Edwin Tong becomes minister for law and second minister for home affairs. He relinquishes his portfolio in culture, community and youth but remains deputy chairman of the people’s association.
* Tan See Leng is appointed minister-in-charge of energy and science & technology within the ministry of trade and industry, while continuing as minister for manpower.
* Chee Hong Tat takes over as minister for national development and relinquishes his previous portfolios in transport and finance.

Other appointments
* Faishal Ibrahim is named acting minister-in-charge of muslim affairs and will remain senior minister of state in home affairs, stepping down from national development.
* Sim Ann becomes senior minister of state at home affairs, continues at foreign affairs, and steps down from national development.
* Janil Puthucheary is appointed senior minister of state at education and sustainability and the environment, leaving his roles in digital development and health.
* Koh Poh Koon becomes senior minister of state at health, continues at manpower, and leaves sustainability and the environment.
* Zaqy Mohamad is appointed senior minister of state at sustainability and the environment and continues at defence, stepping down from manpower.
* Tan Kiat How becomes senior minister of state at health and continues in digital development, stepping down from national development.
* Sun Xueling becomes senior minister of state at national development and transport, leaving home affairs and social and family development.
* Gan Siow Huang is appointed minister of state at foreign affairs and trade and industry, stepping down from education and manpower.
* Alvin Tan becomes minister of state at national development and continues in trade and industry, stepping down from culture, community and youth.
* Baey Yam Keng becomes minister of state at culture, community and youth, and transport, stepping down from sustainability and the environment.
* Eric Chua is appointed senior parliamentary secretary at law, continues at social and family development, and steps down from culture, community and youth.
* Shawn Huang is appointed senior parliamentary secretary at manpower, continues at finance, and steps down from education.

New political officeholders
* David Neo is appointed acting minister for culture, community and youth and senior minister of state for education.
* Jeffrey Siow becomes acting minister for transport and senior minister of state for finance.
* Dinesh Vasu Dash is appointed minister of state at culture, community and youth, and manpower.
* Desmond Choo becomes minister of state at defence.
* Jasmin Lau is appointed minister of state at digital development and information, and education.
* Goh Pei Ming is appointed minister of state at home affairs and social and family development.
* Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim is appointed minister of state at foreign affairs and social and family development.
* Goh Hanyan becomes senior parliamentary secretary at culture, community and youth, and sustainability and the environment.
* Syed Harun Alhabsyi is appointed senior parliamentary secretary at education and national development.

Mayoral appointments
* Baey Yam Keng is appointed mayor of North East district.
* Dinesh Vasu Dash becomes mayor of South East district.

Meanwhile, six long-serving officeholders will also retire, namely Heng Swee Keat, Teo Chee Hean, Ng Eng Hen, Maliki Osman, Heng Chee How, and Amy Khor.

The prime minister expressed his deep appreciation for their dedicated service and contributions across multiple portfolios.

The swearing-in for ministers, senior ministers of state, and ministers of state will take place on 23 May 2025. Senior parliamentary secretaries will be sworn in on a separate date.

All appointments will take effect from 23 May 2025 unless otherwise specified.
