SG60: Singapore to build more Community Care Apartments for seniors
But PM Wong says CCAs cannot be the main solution for the seniors' long-term care.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has encouraged building more Community Care Apartments (CCAs) in Singapore over the coming years in his speech at the National Rally Day on 17 August.
CCA, a joint initiative by Singapore’s National Development and Health ministries, are among the government’s responses to tackle long-term care and living arrangements for Singapore’s senior population.
CCAs are HDB flats that combine housing with care arrangements for seniors. They come with senior-friendly features, like wheelchair-accessible bathrooms with grab bars and slip-resistant floors.
“I told Desmond Lee, who was then Minister for National Development, that we need more CCAs! So now Chee Hong Tat is in MND pursuing this,” PM Wong said.
“We will build more CCAs across HDB towns over the coming years,” he added.
But PM Wong said CCAs cannot be the main solution, and there is a limit to how many new CCAs the government can build.
“But we can take the essential elements from the CCA, and apply the same thinking to the wider neighbourhood – to build 'Age Well Neighbourhoods' that support our seniors wherever they are,” Wong said.
